In-plant Bests Commercial Shops in PIA Print ContestApril 1, 2012 By Bob Neubauer
The Emerald Ball at the University of North Texas is proving to be a winning event for UNT Printing & Distribution Solutions. Last year the in-plant won Best of Show in the In-Print 2011 contest for producing the invitation for the fund-raising event. And now the invitation for the 2012 Emerald Ball has won the shop another high-profile award.
In Printing Industries of Mid-America’s Graphic Excellence Awards competition, the Emerald Ball invitation won Best of Category in the Digital Division for the Denton, Texas, in-plant. What’s more, two other pieces (a booklet and a bumper sticker) won Awards of Excellence in the contest, which is predominantly entered by commercial printers in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.
“By winning the awards against the commercial shops, we feel it validates that there are many, many great quality in-plant print operations throughout the country,” remarks Jimmy Friend, director of UNT Printing & Distribution Solutions. He credits the in-plant’s lead graphic artist, Robert Peters, for designing the piece, and lauds his staff for hustling to print the invitation, envelope and several insert pieces prior to leaving for their winter break in December.
Friend says his in-plant is not a PIA member, so he was surprised to get the invitation to submit some items. He and his staff were preparing entries for the In-Print contest at the time, and decided to send some extra samples to the PIA contest, almost as an afterthought. The awards came as a big surprise.
“We weren’t expecting that, so we are happy to be recognized for our outstanding work,” he says.
The Emerald Ball invitation won a Silver award in the Special Projects category in the In-Print 2012 contest, which was judged in March.
