It’s one of the most thriving in-plants in the country, with 75 employees, an eight-color offset press and more than 100 In-Print awards to its credit. But one thing University of Oklahoma Printing & Mailing Services did not have was a high-speed digital color press.

Until now.

The century-old in-plant just installed a Kodak NexPress 2500 digital press, along with a NexGlosser unit.

“I had been kicking it around for probably three years,” says Administrator John Sarantakos. He knew the in-plant needed a high-speed digital color device, but having installed an eight-color, 40? Heidelberg a year ago, Sarantakos wanted to focus on keeping that press busy before looking into a digital device.

Now that the NexPress is in, the in-plant is already diverting jobs to it from its five-color MAN Roland. One early success came when a customer asked for 100 advanced copies of a magazine that the shop was preparing to put on press. The NexPress handled it with no problem.

“It actually matched almost perfectly with the press sheets,” Sarantakos says. “All the crossovers, they hit exactly.” Needless to say, the client was elated.

The in-plant has also upgraded its workflow with Kodak’s InSite portfolio. This includes components for Web-based job submission, job ordering, soft proofing, design collaboration and campaign management. Also included is the Darwin variable data design tool.

In other OU news, the in-plant has replaced its Canon CLCs with Océ equipment, including an Océ 6250, two Océ 1105s, three color Océ 650s and two Océ 75s.

Looks like a copier to me. Ask a press person if it is a press. I bet they tell you it's not.
