Bob has served as editor of In-plant Impressions since October of 1994. Prior to that he served for three years as managing editor of Printing Impressions, a commercial printing publication. Mr. Neubauer is very active in the U.S. in-plant industry. He attends all the major in-plant conferences and has visited more than 170 in-plant operations around the world. He has given presentations to numerous in-plant groups in the U.S., Canada and Australia, including the Association of College and University Printers and the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association. He also coordinates the annual In-Print contest, co-sponsored by IPMA and In-plant Impressions.

Now in its 18th year, the On Demand Conference and Exposition tried something new this time when it moved south of the Mason-Dixon line to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Not everyone was happy with the results. Though some exhibits were packed at intervals, others were not so busy. Perhaps the absence of key companies like Xerox, Kodak, Presstek and Standard caused some potential attendees to skip this year's event. Or maybe D.C. was too far for the Northeast day trippers who attended previous years' shows in Philadelphia, Boston and New York.

InfoTrends’ Third Annual TransPromo Summit moved from New York to Boston this year. It took place in August with 225 in attendance. While this number is down somewhat from last year (the organizers blame the lackluster economy), it was interesting to note that a full 10 percent of these attendees were from Central and South America.

RISO plans to open a branch in Boston one week from tomorrow, the day after it acquires the customer base of Riso dealer RPB Systems & Services. The new branch will serve the entire state of Massachusetts.

Printers are by transitioning from traditional print shops into marketing service providers. To find out how and why they are differentiating themselves in this way, IKON Office Solutions (now a Ricoh company) and The NAPL Network are offering half-day, hands-on workshops in four cities.

In case you missed this in last month’s in-plant salary survey, the average salary of those who regularly attend educational conferences is 21 percent higher than the average salary of those who don’t. What’s more, the conference whose attendees earned the highest average pay was the On Demand Conference. Whether or not the show really helps boost salaries is unclear, but one thing that’s certain is that the conference is making an obvious effort to focus on in-plants. A quick glance through the program reveals 11 sessions with in-plant managers as speakers.

The Education Summit for Graphic Communication has launched Printalution, an island in the virtual world Second Life, created for the Graphic Communication community to connect, educate and reach out to anyone interested in understanding the print and graphic arts industry. It is a tour location that can be explored by Second Life 'residents', as well as a location high school teachers can take students to learn more about the printing industry.
