Over the past 25 years, Printing Services at The University of West Alabama has not added a single employee. Yet, according to Director Jimmy Robinson, the workload has increased tenfold. “So we have to get machines that are able to do things faster,” he says.

For three days last month, university in-plant managers gathered in Valdosta, Ga., for the 37th annual Southeastern University Printing & Digital Managers Conference (SUPDMC). Organized by Drew Burgering, manager of Printing & Copying Services at Valdosta State University (VSU), the conference included a tour of VSU’s in-plant, a visit to Wiregrass Georgia Technical College’s printing/teaching facility and a tour of the Valdosta Daily Times newspaper plant, South Georgia Printing.
University of West Alabama recently took delivery of a Xanté Ilumina Digital Envelope Press. Now envelope jobs have gone from two-hour projects to just eight minutes per box.
Last month, Ricoh’s Production Printing Business Group (PPBG) brought a dozen in-plant managers to Milwaukee for its annual In-plant Advisory Council meeting. Attendees toured the world-class Briggs and Stratton in-plant and attended two days of meetings, during which they were asked for opinions and feedback on new Ricoh products, services and strategic directions.

After its cancellation last year due to low registration numbers, the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP) conference was back with a vengeance this year. Attendees this year hailed from as far away as Australia, New Zealand and Scotland, and included managers from all over the U.S., from Oregon to New Hampshire, with a large contingent from Texas.
