"There is a drum beat in Congress to cut printing," declared U.S. Public Printer Bill Boarman on Wednesday, speaking to a crowd of about 80 government and higher-ed printers, consultants and vendors. He was addressing the INTERQUEST Digital Printing in Government and Higher Education Forum in Washington, D.C. His task, he stressed, as leader of the Government Printing Office, is not to preserve printing at all costs, but to make sure reductions are done in a way that doesn't hurt the legislative process.

The ReproGraphic Services department at San Diego State University prides itself as being a small but versatile group. To prove it can be even more nimble and flexible, the in-plant recently updated its bindery and rearranged the pressroom for a more efficient workflow. In late June, the shop installed a Morgana DigiFold 5000P folder and a Duplo System 5000 bookletmaker with two eight-bin towers. The Morgana folder joins an older Baum folder, while the Duplo replaces a 16-year-old Horizon booklet-maker. Since the new machines are much quieter than their predecessors, the in-plant was able to reduce noise levels.
HOLDING AN open house is a great way for your in-plant to promote its capabilities and generate new business. All it takes is a little planning. To help you and give you some ideas, we spoke with three California in-plants that have held open houses. San Diego State University (SDSU), California State Polytechnic University-Pomona and California State University-Sacramento built on each others’ experiences to make their events even more successful. In all three cases, open houses were organized around the acquisition of new digital printing equipment. Leslie Rutledge, manager of ReproGraphic Services at SDSU, was the first of the three to take the plunge.
San Diego State University ReproGraphic Services has received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification for the paper products used in its operation. To earn this certification, ReproGraphics underwent a rigorous process that encompassed a site audit of its policies and procedures, records, paper usage and product labeling.
