In-plants Should Offer Managed Print Services

In his new blog, Ray Chambers, of Chambers Management Group, notes that a lot of organizations are focusing on right-sizing their copier/MFD fleets. They are turning to equipment vendors who offer "managed print services" and promise savings of 30 percent by reducing the number of printers, copiers and fax machines they have and purchasing competitively.

IPG Editor Bob Neubauer traveled to Pemberton, N.J., to visit the in-plant at Burlington County College. In March, the six-employee in-plant added a new four-color Ryobi 524GE offset press. Though the shop already had a pair of two-color presses and used them to produce lots of four-color work, Manager Steve Amitrano had wanted a four-color press for a long time.

Graph Expo More Exhibitor Friendly

New legislation passed in May by the Illinois General Assembly will result in greater work rule flexibility and lower costs at McCormick Place for vendors exhibiting at Graph Expo 2010. Additional changes, including reductions in utilities, related services, and in food and beverage pricing, will also positively affect attendees. This year's show takes place Oct. 3-6 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

The Pitman Co. has been in the news a lot lately. First Kodak terminated Pitman's right to distribute Kodak products and signed up xpedx as its authorized reseller. Then Agfa Graphics signed an agreement to purchase the Pitman Co., a leading US supplier of prepress, industrial ink-jet, pressroom and packaging printing products and systems.

IPG's Philadelphia's headquarters yesterday to reveal the new products they plan to launch at GRAPH EXPO, October 3-6 in Chicago. These include new thermal plates, new computer-to-plate devices and a new direct imaging offset press.
State of Washington's In-plant Audit Raises Eyebrows

After a proposal to close the State of Washington's in-plant died in the state Senate earlier this year, the state auditor's office decided to do a full performance audit of the Department of Printing, along with auditing 25 agencies for their office printing and in-plants. The way the auditor's office has gone about this, however, has raised eyebrows in the printing community.

Green Bill Would Give Tax Credit for Printing

The “Print Buyer’s Reduction in Taxes Bill of 2010” (PRINT), which was presented to the U.S. Congress on Wednesday, is said to offer print purchasers a credit against income tax for the completion of sustainable print projects. The proposed bill was detailed at a Legislative Intensive Session held during the ninth annual Print Oasis Print Buyers Conference in Washington, DC.
Agfa Acquires Pitman Co.

Agfa Graphics has signed an agreement to purchase the assets of the Harold M. Pitman Co., the distributor of prepress, industrial inkjet, pressroom and packaging printing products and systems in the United States. Plans call for the Pitman brand to be retained and the business to continue operating as a subsidiary of Agfa.
Direct Mail Still Leading Marketing Medium

Direct mail currently represents 17 percent of the overall marketing budget, the largest share of any medium, according to a report released by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA). Digital media use has grown rapidly, but many businesses still consider themselves operating in the learning, transitioning and integrating phases, according to the findings of "The Digital Marketing Practices and Trends" report.
