Here's a quote to make every in-plant manager cringe. To defend a bill he introduced in the Washington State Senate that would eliminate the state's Department of Printing, Senator Rodney Tom reasoned: "Everybody does desktop printing these days. It's not like 30 years ago when you had a steno pool and printers, but we're still stuck in that age."
Two In-plants Honored by NAPL

The National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL) recently honored two in-plants, both from the Pacific Northwest, during its Top Management Conference in San Marco, Fla.
Portland General Electric's Printing & Automated Mail Services team received a Management Plus Silver Award from NAPL, while the Washington State Department of Printing, in Olympia, Wash., earned a Merit Award. This is the third Management Plus Award for PGE, following two Gold Awards it received over the past two years.
Three Months Till IPMA Conference

The In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association's annual conference begins just three months from tomorrow in Albuquerque, N.M. In-plant managers from around the country will be assembling at the Hotel Albuquerque from June 6-9 for what is being billed as the Dream Color conference.
Presstek Open House on Tuesday

Presstek plans to hold a one-day open house event in its Hudson, N.H., demonstration center next Tuesday, March 9, from 8:00 to 3:00.
The event will feature educational workshops on color management and workflow, along with demonstrations of the new Presstek 52DI-AC digital offset press with an inline aqueous coater, and the Presstek 52DI equipped with the UV printing option. Presstek's chemistry-free platesetters, plates, integrated workflow and Web-to-print solutions will also be on display. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
In-Print Contest Judging Monday

The entries are all in, the judges are ready and on Monday the winners of In-Print 2010 will be selected at last. More than 400 projects were submitted this year, ranging in complexity from stationery to magazines and annual reports. Each one of them will be carefully inspected on Monday by a panel of five judges, who will assemble at Redlands Community College, in El Reno, Okla.

Those of you who oversee copier management programs should probably not try what this erstwhile in-plant manager did to fatten his wallet. Michael Vernon Warren, 60, the former director of publications and copy services at Chicago State University, devised a plot in which the university bought overpriced copy machines and paper from a company he owned.
Pitney Bowes to Open New Mail Distribution Center

Pitney Bowes has selected Newark, N.J., as the site for its expanded mail services operations and will open a new International Mail Distribution Center there next month. The relocation and expansion will bring 180 jobs to Newark, and is expected to create an additional 25 jobs in New Jersey's largest city over the next few years.
Curley Chosen to Take Helm at NewPage

NewPage Corp. has chosen Tom Curley, a 30-year corporate veteran, to take over as president and CEO, effective immediately. Curley began his career with General Electric, and he has worked with organizations such as Caterpillar Inc. and Cooper Cameron. Prior to joining NewPage, Curley served as president of the Rolls-Royce Energy business.
