As departments at Marist College increasingly use their copiers for smaller jobs, the in-plant has found itself handling more of the color-critical variable data marketing work needed by the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., college.

When a new piece of equipment comes to the rescue on a difficult job, you can’t help but feel satisfied. That’s certainly how Supervisor Ernest Fierros felt when the commencement program for Arizona Western College arrived at his Yuma, Ariz., in-plant one week late.

For many years at Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS), associates had free reign to print as many brochures, booklets, flyers and forms as they saw fit, with very little monitoring of costs. When materials became outdated, thousands of copies were discarded and more were ordered.

The recent Association of College and University Printers conference may have taken place in sunny Phoenix, Ariz., but it was no vacation. The 82 managers who traveled there from all over the world came for answers and advice on how to keep their in-plants thriving in these trying times. The three days of intensive educational sessions did not disappoint them.

The Dickinson College Print Center still had a year left on the lease of its Xerox iGen3 digital color press when the Carlisle, Pa., in-plant decided to replace it in July. Kenneth Ball, director of User Services, had two very good reasons for upgrading to an iGen4 Diamond Edition. 

When Karin Tarter first descended the stairway to the old fallout shelter that housed the print operation for Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), she passed a sign that read "Enter At Your Own Risk." It was July 25, 2000, and the former freelance marketing consultant and graphic designer was stepping into her first day on the job as manager of the district's in-plant, Graphics Enterprise Services.
