More than 2,000 enthusiastic HP users packed the auditorium at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville last month for the opening of the eighth annual Dscoop conference, a gathering of graphic arts business owners and technical professionals who use HP equipment. The three-day meeting included scores of educational sessions geared toward HP users, as well as an exhibit area with nearly 100 partners showing equipment and software designed to work with HP equipment.

Tight budgets in Louisiana and the need for more on-demand printing have compelled the Office of State Printing to slim down and digitize. The slimming down came in October when staff reductions brought the Baton Rouge operation down to 20 full-time employees plus five student workers. The transition from offset to digital technologies followed closely after.

Dscoop Conference in Nashville Deemed a Success

After a welcome from Dscoop officials (all sporting bad toupees with ponytails), a bluegrass band gave an appropriate Tennessee greeting by getting the crowd to sing along to Rocky Top, a state anthem. Then keynote speaker Mark King, CEO of TaylorMade gave an uplifting and humorous talk that detailed how he and his team developed a vision to become the best performance golf brand in the world, then followed through with it.

On Demand 2011: Digital Innovations

Now in its 18th year, the On Demand Conference and Exposition tried something new this time when it moved south of the Mason-Dixon line to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Not everyone was happy with the results. Though some exhibits were packed at intervals, others were not so busy. Perhaps the absence of key companies like Xerox, Kodak, Presstek and Standard caused some potential attendees to skip this year's event. Or maybe D.C. was too far for the Northeast day trippers who attended previous years' shows in Philadelphia, Boston and New York.
