Bob has served as editor of In-plant Impressions since October of 1994. Prior to that he served for three years as managing editor of Printing Impressions, a commercial printing publication. Mr. Neubauer is very active in the U.S. in-plant industry. He attends all the major in-plant conferences and has visited more than 170 in-plant operations around the world. He has given presentations to numerous in-plant groups in the U.S., Canada and Australia, including the Association of College and University Printers and the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association. He also coordinates the annual In-Print contest, co-sponsored by IPMA and In-plant Impressions.

Ray Chambers, CGCM, MBA, has invested over 30 years managing and directing printing plants, copy centers, mail centers and award-winning document management facilities in higher education and government.

Most recently, Chambers served as vice president and chief information officer at Juniata College. Chambers is currently a doctoral candidate studying Higher Education Administration at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU). His research interests include outsourcing in higher education and its impact on support services in higher education and managing support services. He also consults (Chambers Management Group) with leaders in both the public and private sectors to help them understand and improve in-plant printing and document services operations.

Last month I had an opportunity to moderate a web­inar on the topic "Justifying Your In-plant's Value in Tough Times." It's obviously an important subject for in-plants, as evidenced by the 250+ people who signed up for the live event. I was glad to see so many familiar managers on the attendee list from all over the U.S. and Canada.

The 47th annual Association of College & University Printers conference has come to a close. Nearly 100 in-plant managers from 70 universities met in Harrisburg, Pa., recently for two days of educational sessions, followed by a trip to Lewisburg to tour Bucknell University's in-plant and see its Xerox Color 800 press in action. This was followed by a special screening of the documentary Linotype, The Film at The Campus Theatre.

xpedx and Ryobi Ltd. have agreed to end their distribution relationship in the United States and Canada. Effective October 1, Ferrostaal AG will be master distributor for Ryobi offset printing presses in these markets.

Maybe Wayne Guiney should have been a politician. At least that's what some people have said to him, because his people skills have kept the staffs he's managed at multiple in-plants on his side.

On Sunday, college and university in-plant managers from all over the U.S., Canada and even the U.K. will assemble in Dallas for the 46th annual Association of College and University Printers conference.

AN IN-PLANT is a perfect candidate for applying Lean production practices. We are essentially a manufacturing environment that uses multiple steps in various processes. We utilize a variety of equipment, technology, human resources and supplies. There is an ever-present risk of waste and errors, and quality and speed are at the forefront of our concerns.
