PITTSBURGH—January 29, 2008--PIA/GATF will explain how graphic communications companies can take advantage of two of the industry’s hottest trends, lean manufacturing and green printing, when its National Seminar Tour resumes this spring. It will also focus on sustainable manufacturing practices that can have the dual benefit of meeting customer demands and reducing costs. Ken Rizzo, PIA/GATF’s director of consulting and head of its Center for Lean Practices, and Gary Jones, PIA/GATF’s director of environmental, health, and safety, will co-present the program.

City government in-plants have to be fast, flexible and politically savvy. By Mike Llewellyn IT WASN'T too long ago that brush fires were gorging themselves on Southern California scrub and turning the nation's attention to the seemingly endless struggle firefighters had set before them. As the nightly news broadcast eerie aerial shots of glowing fire lines snaking their way across mountainsides, in downtown San Diego, uncomfortably near the blazes, Mayor Dick Murphy put in a call to the city manager's office. If the mayor and other city leaders were to decide how to address the wildfires, they had to work from the same report.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing is important enough to CIP4, Creo, Printcafe and MAN Roland to take it out on the road. The four have joined forces to develop a series of seminars, free for printers, titled "CIM in Print: It's Here. It's Working. It's Ready for You." The seminars will show printers how to utilize CIM to streamline workflows and maximize automation. The dates are: • November 12: Phoenix • November 13: San Diego • November 14: Los Angeles • November 19: San Francisco • November 20: Seattle • November 21: Vancouver The roadshow will hit the South and Southwest in January and catch up

When the City of San Diego's in-plant sees an opportunity, it rushes right in to take advantage of it. The resulting mix of services, both traditional and nontraditional, has kept customers happy. by CAROLINE MILLER Not only is variety the spice of life for the City of San Diego's in-plant. It's also the key to its success. "We've found that we've had to continually reinvent ourselves, and that like all good in-plants we have to always anticipate the needs of our customers before our customers do," says Liam McGuigan, deputy director of the general services department for the City of San Diego.
