Located in the southern portion of western Oregon's Willamette Valley, about two hours south of Portland, Springfield Public Schools (SPS) is the second largest employer in the city of Springfield. Its 22 schools host about 10,600 students and employ 800 teaching staff and 400 administrators and support staff.

The In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) held its first online chapter meeting on Tuesday, and it was a big success. Though it was organized by the Portland, Ore., chapter, participants spanned the country, joining in from Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Indiana and other places. “This is really a historic first for the IPMA,” proclaimed Dana Bauer, of Fred Meyer’s Portland-based in-plant. The meeting was facilitated by Ricoh’s Production Printing Business Group (PPBG), with Greg Cholmondeley serving as host. Participants phoned in and also logged in to be able to watch PowerPoint presentations. Mike Loyd, a Ricoh program marketing manager, gave a presentation

IT WAS a particularly painful memory from Kim Knox’s early career: a former boss remarked that as the youngest and least-paid, Knox would be the one taking extra overtime. The comment drew laughs from more tenured employees, but not from Knox. “I will never forget how it made me feel, like I was worth less and could be worked harder just because I was paid less,” comments Knox. “That made a big impact on me and how I treat those that work for me.” Today, Knox, supervisor of Print and Mail Services for The Regence Group, in Portland, Ore., has

As you evaluate new digital printer platforms, take a careful look inside the box. Is the quality of digital networked printers as good as it's going to get? Not at all. The newest generation of printers is approaching image quality in a new way. To date, digital platforms have offered in-plants limited quality improvements over their optical predecessors. That's because most existing digital print platforms retain many of the same imaging components and processes used in optical devices. Since optical and digital devices approach the imaging process from different perspectives, the technology needs to be tailored to the process. Conventional optical
