Bob has served as editor of In-plant Impressions since October of 1994. Prior to that he served for three years as managing editor of Printing Impressions, a commercial printing publication. Mr. Neubauer is very active in the U.S. in-plant industry. He attends all the major in-plant conferences and has visited more than 170 in-plant operations around the world. He has given presentations to numerous in-plant groups in the U.S., Canada and Australia, including the Association of College and University Printers and the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association. He also coordinates the annual In-Print contest, co-sponsored by IPMA and In-plant Impressions.

When will an inkjet production press make its way into your in-plant? The technology is advancing steadily, and a handful of in-plants have already invested in it, but for most managers, inkjet means wide-format, not high volumes and high speeds.

Last week more than 135 in-plant managers met in Charleston, S.C. for the 52nd In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association conference. With 44 first-time attendees and more than 135 in-plants overall, the conference was bustling with activity, conversations and excitement.

Jimmy Friend didn't want a new offset press. "We thought that we would not invest in offset in the future," reveals Friend, director of University of North Texas Printing Services. His 40-employee in-plant had two HP Indigo digital presses, and was getting good prices for long-run offset jobs from outside printers. Why rock the boat?

In October, the Texas Association of College and University Printers (TACUP) joined forces with the Southwest Association of College and University Mail Services (SWACUMS) for a conference at the University of Houston (UH).

Charlie Holden knew that something had to be done about four-color work at the Houston Independent School District. Her in-plant’s two-color Komori press was 22 years old and produced an awful lot of spoilage each time the in-plant used it to print four-color jobs. And customers, in need of faster turnaround, were relying on color copiers, using them for volumes they were never meant to produce.
